Life Outside the Hospital

Family

I met my first wife and mother of my children, Yonina, in medical school. We have two lovely girls, Elona and Lee. Elona was premature and born at 33 weeks. She was only 3lbs. Caring for Elona in my six weeks off of residency was one of the single most happiest times in my life. I’ll never forget the first time she saw me and smiled back.

My daughters are the most important part of my life.  When I am with them, I feel complete. I imagine like most parents, I marvel at my children.  They are kind, smart, beautiful young ladies who make me so proud. I am a better human being because of my children.  I know and understand self-sacrifice.  I would do anything for my kids.  I know unconditional love.  I am loyal and caring.

My kids and I stay active together. In the summer of 2018, we attempted to summit Mt. Rainier but we were thwarted by bad weather.  We hike, ski, and play tennis together. I visit them in their home in Israel every year.

Recreational Softball

Baseball was one of the few luxuries my parents allowed me to participate in as a kid. I continue to play recreationally to this day, softball in the spring and summer months.

Rock ‘n Roll

My love for rock n’ roll flourished in college. Record albums were my weekly splurge that I allowed myself, despite being in a tough bind financially. Some of the most memorable concerts I saw were in my college years, including the Pretenders first tour, Billy Joel, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Cheap Trick, Journey, and the Babys.

Today, I have an enormous vinyl record and CD collection which I am in the midst of digitizing. I do play my music in the operating room. It relaxes me and puts me in the “zone” for operating.

Hiking & The Outdoors

I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest when I first came to Seattle for a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center. When I received a call from my mentor to come back 23 years later, I eagerly left my home in southern California. I spend as much time as I can outside when I’m not working and have enjoyed getting to see the Pacific Northwest from many different vantage points.
